3 Schools Tie for Top Spot in Academic Quiz
The main event in Los Angeles’ version of the high school academic Olympics concluded Saturday afternoon with three teams--Dorsey, Garfield, and University high schools--tied for first place in a contest whose subject was “Immigration to the United States.â€
The three Super Quiz winners were among 53 teams from the city’s high schools competing at Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles in the final and premier event of the Unified School District’s Fifth Annual Academic Decathlon.
Cheers for Scholars
The event was attended by 1,200 cheering students, teachers and fans, even though Super Quiz is just one part of the overall 10-event decathlon, results of which will be revealed at an awards banquet Thursday, a school spokesman said.
Dorsey’s Super Quiz finish this year was its second consecutive in first place. Palisades High School, the overall decathlon winner in all four years of the contest’s existence, finished second in the Super Quiz.
This year’s decathlon was marked by controversy stemming from new Los Angeles school board guidelines that said teams should reflect the composition of the schools they represent by race and sex.
