Despite rainy weather that frequently drenched the fans, profits from this summer’s Wimbledon tennis championships rose by 26% to another record, organizers announced. They said this was partly due to a favorable dollar-pound exchange rate.
This year’s profits rose to 5.37 million pounds ($8.19 million), compared with 4.25 million pounds (then worth $5.1 million) in 1984, which was itself a record on the previous tournament.
The addition of 800 seats on Center Court boosted attendance figures during the two weeks of Wimbledon to a record 397,983--up 6,983 on last year.
