Tennis Roundup : U.S. Clinches 47th Wightman Cup Victory Over Britain

Betsy Nagelsen and Anne White teamed for a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Annabel Croft and Virginia Wade at Williamsburg, Va., Friday night, and the United States clinched the 57th Wightman Cup by taking an insurmountable lead over Great Britain.
The U.S. team, which holds a 47-10 lead in the annual series, took a 4-0 advantage into today’s final three matches.
Earlier in the evening, Pam Shriver overwhelmed Croft, 6-0, 6-0, in 43 minutes to give the Americans a 3-0 lead.
The doubles teams battled to 4-4 in the first set before Wade lost her service in the ninth game. The Americans held serve to win the set and breezed to victory in 54 minutes.
Chris Evert Lloyd defeated Jo Durie, and Kathy Rinaldi downed Anne Hobbs in opening matches Thursday.
Boris Becker of West Germany crushed Tim Wilkison, 6-2, 6-1, at Antwerp, Belgium and advanced to a semifinal match against John McEnroe in the $850,000 European Champions’ championship.
Earlier in the day, Henri Leconte of France suffered a sprained ankle in his quarterfinal match against Czechoslovakia’s Ivan Lendl and was forced to retire early in the first set.
The victory sent Lendl into the semifinals against Sweden’s Anders Jarryd, who beat Mats Wilander, also of Sweden, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. McEnroe routed Mark Dickson, 6-0, 6-2.
Top-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia defeated unseeded Catherine Tanvier of France, 6-3, 6-3, and advanced to the semifinals of the $150,000 European Indoor tournament.
Zina Garrison, seeded third, also reached the semifinals with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sandra Cecchini of Italy, seeded seventh.
