To residents, the great brush fires that periodically sweep across Southern California are destructive and potentially life threatening, but to the chaparral that burns, the flames mean life.

The life cycle of the familiar brushy stands covering the mountains around the Los Angeles Basin will be the subject of a permanent Los Angeles County Natural History Museum exhibit, “Chaparral: A Story of Life From Fire,†museum officials said Wednesday.

The exhibit, costing about $450,000, is expected to open by next fall. More than half the cost will be paid out of a $250,000 grant from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
