Chapman Shuts Out Pomona in Soccer, 1-0
John Long’s goal at the 37:58 mark of the first half provided the difference as Chapman College’s soccer team scored a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday at Chapman.
Long headed the ball into the net after a deflection off the crossbar. Mario Carrillo barely misfired on a 40-yarder, Pomona goalie Tony Riegler tipped the ball as it glanced off the crossbar and Long came in to score on his head shot.
Chapman goalie Ken Taylor made that single goal stand up as he turned away nine Pomona shots, preserving the Panthers’ fifth shutout at home this season, a school record. Riegler had 12 saves for Pomona.
The victory was Chapman’s seventh straight at home over two seasons, improving the Panthers’ overall record in 1985 to 9-6-1. At 6-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., Chapman remained in first place, holding a half-game lead over Cal State Northridge (6-2).
