Hart relied on a hurry-up offense Friday night at Memorial Field in Burbank to take a 22-7 Foothill League victory from Burroughs.

“Working without a huddle forces our players to concentrate,†Hart Coach Rick Scott said. “It also gives our quarterback a chance to take a good long look at what type of defense he’s going up against.â€

Hart quarterback Jim Bonds seemed to thrive under this system, completing 11 of 25 pass attempts for 189 yards. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Hart (2-0, 3-3-1) drove 68 yards in 8 plays on its first possession with Brian Baie scoring on a two-yard plunge.

Burroughs (0-2, 2-5) evened the score with 11:20 left in the half when quarterback Jeff Barrett connected with Brian Kaloustian on a 60-yard pass play that Kaloustian caught while being draped by two Hart defenders.

Hart regained the lead with 5:37 left in the half when Bonds ran five yards around left end for a score. The play put the finishing touch on a 7-play, 62-yard drive that featured two Bonds-to-Chris Hite completions totaling 46 yards.

For the rest of the game, Hart’s offensive line took control.

“It was our most consistent effort of the year,†said Burroughs Coach George Rosales, whose team has now lost four in a row and has scored seven points or less in all but two of its games this season. “We made less mistakes tonight. Their big guys up front just wore us down.â€

Baie scored his second touchdown when he capped a 70-yard, 13-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run with 8:03 left in the game.

“We wanted to get up on them and force them to go to man-to-man coverage,†Scott said. “We felt we could handle them up front and let our backs go at it.â€
