A 47-year-old factory worker who received a Jarvik-7 artificial heart while awaiting a human organ underwent a second round of surgery today to fix a “not uncommon†bleeding problem encountered by artificial heart patients, officials said.

Thomas J. Gaidosh was returned to surgery at about 6 a.m. today for an hourlong procedure to stop “an unacceptable accumulation of blood in the chest,†according to his surgeon, Dr. Bartley Griffith of the University of Pittsburgh. Hospital spokesman Tom Chakurda said the problem has been alleviated. Gaidosh received the mechanical pump Thursday at Presbyterian-University Hospital.
