Typhoon Dot Hits Philippines

MANILA — A powerful typhoon bore down on the main Philippine island of Luzon today, dumping heavy rain and touching off volcanic mud flows.
Typhoon Dot weakened slightly at dusk to peak winds of 137 m.p.h. and veered from populous Manila.
