It was a difficult week for The Times’ Valley Top 10 last Friday. Six of the 10 teams lost, creating several changes in this week’s poll.

San Fernando had opened the season with a 21-0 win over Manual Arts, elevating the Tigers to No. 2. But San Fernando dropped a 9-3 decision to San Pedro on Friday and dropped to No. 8.

Third-ranked Kennedy fell to No. 6 following an 8-0 loss to Washington.

Westlake remained No. 5, despite losing to Palos Verdes, 40-36. The Warriors did get five touchdown passes from quarterback Brad Gossen in losing their first of three games.

The Nos. 8-10 teams last week--Simi Valley, Hart and Cleveland--fell from the Top 10 after losing. Simi Valley lost to Agoura, 17-14, and Hart remained winless, losing to Alemany, 27-17.

Cleveland dropped an exciting 23-20 decision to Canoga Park, which made its first entry into the Top 10 at No. 9. Agoura checked in at No. 10. Taft is the only other new entry, its 2-0 record earning the Toreadors the No. 7 spot.

Granada Hills moved up to No. 2, while Alemany went from No. 6 to No. 3. Crespi is the No. 4 team.

Canyon remained No. 1 following a 21-0 win over Thousand Oaks. The Cowboys, winners of 27 straight over three seasons, are 3-0 in 1985.

Granada Hills advanced to No. 2 behind the play of Times Valley Player of the Week Greg Fowble. The senior wide receiver-placekicker accounted for 25 points in the Highlanders’ 37-13 win over Chatsworth.

Fowble had touchdown catches of 45, 33 and 60 yards from quarterback Brent Spurlin. Fowble also had four extra points and a field goal.

Gossen, last week’s Player of the Week, was again a candidate for the award, as his five touchdown passes gave him 10 for the season, already a school record.

Canyon’s Lance Cross was another contender. For three quarters, Cross had just 25 yards on 13 carries. But in the fourth quarter alone, Cross rushed for 100 yards on nine carries. He scored all three Canyon touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter.

Montclair Prep running back Riche Swinton also had three touchdowns, as the Mounties beat Van Nuys, 19-7. Swinton finished with 153 yards on 18 carries.

Greg Spaulding, a junior tackle for Calabasas, helped the Coyotes defeat Bishop Diego, 25-0. Spaulding accounted for seven unassisted tackles and four sacks and helped the defense limit Bishop Diego to 70 yards in total offense.
