Approximately 90,000 soccer fans will miss their teams in action tonight when Juventus of Italy and Glasgow Celtic play to empty stadiums as punishment for crowd violations last season.
Juventus, bidding to win the Champions Cup for the second straight season, faces tiny Jeunesse d’Esch of Luxembourg in a match that would have drawn a crowd of about 30,000. But Juventus is being penalized by the European soccer body, UEFA, for its fans’ role in the Brussels, Belgium, riots last May in which 39 people were killed.
Celtic faces Atletico Madrid in the first round of the Cup Winner’s Cup tonight, and a crowd of 60,000 had been expected. But Celtic is being punished by UEFA for its fans attacking two Rapid Vienna players during a Cup Winner’s Cup match last season.
