The Coast Guard is searching for Richard Brigham, an El Cajon man who is about six weeks overdue in his solo voyage from Honolulu to San Diego. Brigham, a 15-year veteran sailor, was expected to reach San Diego Aug. 25 on his 32-foot catamaran. He was reported missing by his sister on Sept. 20. His previous sailing experience includes one Pacific crossing and several voyages along the West Coast. A Coast Guard spokesman said the last word Brigham’s sister received was a letter stating that he was going to stop at Kona, Hawaii, before returning home. However, the Honolulu harbor master said that Brigham told him July 8, the day he left, that he would be going straight home. Average sailing time from Honolulu to San Diego, according to the Coast Guard, is four to six weeks. The spokesman said a search is in progress and an urgent marine alert, which asks all ships to report any sightings, is in effect. The Coast Guard is also checking harbors from Vancouver, Canada, to San Diego for word on Brigham.
