An outbreak of malaria has sickened 900 people and killed seven in southern Nepal, where the disease was believed eradicated a decade ago, a Nepalese news agency reported Sunday.

The agency said that 200 people a day in the Kanchenpur district, nearly 300 miles southwest of Katmandu, have been undergoing blood tests to find out whether they have the disease.

Malaria once was a leading killer in southern Nepal, bordering India, but it was eradicated in a joint effort by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the World Health Organization.
