The first eye clinic specializing in problems associated with the use of video display terminals has been opened at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Optometry. The university estimated that 13 million VDTs are now used in the United States, and said the machines “pose problems for both office workers and managers†who use them. Legislation already has been proposed in about 20 states, including California, to regulate construction and use of VDTs. The most important aim of the new clinic is to deal with the “VDTs’ adverse effects on eye health and productivity,†according to university officials, who noted concerns including a “growing number of complaints of eyestrain, double vision, headaches and fatigue.â€
