Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres welcomed Jordanian King Hussein’s call for direct peace talks but said his proposal for an international conference would result in “everlasting delays.†Peres, in a statement released by his Cabinet in response to Hussein’s speech Friday at the U.N. General Assembly, also condemned a proposed $1.5-billion U.S. arms sale to Jordan. He reiterated Israel’s refusal to negotiate with the Palestine Liberation Organization and accused Hussein of condoning terrorism by the PLO.
