Two Czechoslovakian stars were banned from track and field for life after having failed doping tests.
Zdenka Silhava, world record-holder in the women’s discus, and Remigius Machura, a top shotputter, were banished from the sport after testing positive for illegal substances at last month’s European Cup finals in Moscow, said Pierre Dasriaux, secretary of the European Athletics Assn.
Machura, bronze medalist in the 1983 world championships, was second in his speciality at Moscow last month. Silhava, who set the world mark of 244 feet 7 1/2 inches at Nitra, Czechoslovakia, in August, 1984, was third last month.
Although the two were formally disqualified for life, they could be reinstated after a minimum suspension of 18 months if their national track and field governing body successfully appealed the ruling. There was no immediate indication whether an appeal would be made.
