Balding Dutch veteran Joop Zoetemelk won the men’s professional road cycling title at the 1985 World Championships in a big upset at Giavera del Montello, Italy.
Zoetemelk, 38, had never before won a major road race.
Greg LeMond of the United States, the 1983 World Champion, was second and Moreno Argentina of Italy third, just three seconds behind the winner.
Davis Phinney of the United States suffered a concussion in a spill. The injury was not believed to be serious.
