Waldorf Advances in U.S. Amateur

Duffy Waldorf of Tarzana advanced through the first two rounds of match play Thursday at the 85th U.S. Amateur championship at the par-70, 6,943-yard Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, N.J.

In his opening match, Waldorf required only 14 holes to dispatch Roger Brown, of Arkansas City, Kan., 5-and-4. Waldorf was extended to 19 holes in the second round before defeating Lamar Haynes of Dallas, Tex.

Waldorf, who qualified for match play with a second-place score of 137 in two days of medal play, faces Todd Hamilton of Oquawka, Ill., in a third-round match this morning. The tournament continues through Sunday.

Three other Valley golfers did not make the cut at 147. Bob Malpasuto of Northridge shot 156, Mark Phillips of Studio City had a 161 and Craig Steinberg of North Hollywood came within two strokes of qualifying for match play with a 149.

Four Nicks on All-Tournament Team

The North Pole Nicks, runners-up at the National Baseball Congress World Series that ended Tuesday, placed four players on the all-tournament team.

Catcher Todd Zeile, formerly of Hart High and a regular at UCLA, joined infielders Jeff Hughes and Andy Stankiewicz, and outfielder Alan Stankiewicz as all-tournament selections.

KWNK to Carry Cal Lutheran Football

Simi Valley radio station KWNK, 670 AM, will broadcast all five Cal Lutheran College home football games and one road contest this season.

The Kingsmen open the season Sept. 14 at Sonoma State. Their first home game is Sept. 28 against Cal State Hayward.
