Local News in Brief : Ventura County University Bill Sent to Governor by Assembly

The Assembly on Thursday approved and sent to Gov. George Deukmejian a bill authorizing a study to select a site for a permanent University Center in Ventura County.
The current University Center has 600 students and operates in rented office space in Ventura. It is jointly run by California State University, Northridge, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The unanimously approved bill, SB 1103, was introduced by Sen. Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara). It also directs state education officials to determine the types of higher education programs needed in Ventura County.
Development of a four-year state university has been a goal of Ventura County officials for more than a decade.
Hart said the University Center “could provide the impetus for locating the next campus of the state university system in Ventura County.”
The bill was approved by the Senate in June.
