Slaney Sets World Record in Mile

ZURICH, Switzerland — Mary Decker Slaney, unbeaten outdoors this season, broke the world record in the mile today with a time of 4 minutes, 16.71 seconds in the Weltklasse track and field meet. Maricica Puica of Romania, who held the old record of 4:17.44, was second and Britain’s Zola Budd was third.
