Tennis Roundup : Amritraj Eliminated by Masur in Second Round at Montreal

There were no big upsets in the $368,000 Canadian Open Tuesday at Montreal, but one familiar name was eliminated when Vijay Amritraj of India lost to Wally Masur of Australia, 7-6, 6-2.

“To be honest, I think Vijay can play a little better than he did,� said Masur, whose next opponent is Kevin Curren, a finalist at Wimbledon. Masur has lost twice to Curren this year.

“He has been playing well for a long time and he sort has established himself as a top 10 player,� Masur said of Curren. “So his reputation has preceded him but if I play well, you never know.�

Meanwhile, Ivan Lendl had a hard-fought but victorious debut. Paired with Jacob Hlasek, the two Czechoslovakians beat former USC players Roger Knapp and Eric Van’t Hof in doubles, 7-6, 7-6.

In singles, Lendl and the seven other top-ranked players, including defending champion John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, were all given a bye until today’s third round.

In other second-round singles matches, former Pepperdine star Glenn Michibata beat fellow Canadian Laird Dunlop, 6-3, 6-4, and Jay Lapidus beat doubles ace Ken Flach, 6-2, 6-4.
