‘America and Its Poor’
I was horrified about the reports in The Times about the number of families caught in the grips of poverty and the innocent victims, the children. After reading the horrors, the question looms largely in my mind: How did President Reagan get reelected?
President Reagan’s economic policies are the very same policies that led to the 1929 crash and the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Reagan and his supporters strongly support a laissez faire policy regarding our nation’s business interests. The cry we frequently hear is, “Get government off our backs.†Unfettered business will take care of our nation’s needs. Wall Street will care for the nation’s poor, elderly, the young and our environment. To date the report card reads failure on all scores.
