Reported Movement by Statue of Mary Attracts Thousands
DUBLIN, Ireland — A Roman Catholic bishop appealed for calm today after thousands of people flocked to a village in southern Ireland following reports that a statue of the Virgin Mary had moved.
About 8,000 people gathered Wednesday around the five-foot statue in Ballinspittle, County Cork, to observe what villagers described as a miracle.
After reports that a man in his 40s had died overnight, still waiting at the grotto to see a repetition of the event, Bishop Michael Murphy of Cork and Ross issued a statement saying “common sense†should prevail and all natural explanations will have to be examined before any definite pronouncement can be made.
