The Defense Department denied that it had refused Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) use of a military plane during the August recess becuase of his House Energy and Commerce Committee’s success in exposing defense contract abuses. Rep. Dennis E. Eckart (D-Ohio) and committee staff members said there was another reason other than a shortage of planes: Dingell’s success in exposing Pentagon procurement abuses. Dingell canceled his Fact-finding mission to Europe.
