This is to inform you that “Yesterday, Los Angeles” on Imperial Supermarket June 23 is inaccurate.
This market never was located on the land now occupied in the LeSage complex. It was located where Kal’s Market is, south of 6th Street on Vermont. Having been a resident of South New Hampshire Avenue since 1940, being within two blocks of this market, I, along with my late mother, shopped there prior to when this picture was taken and for some years since.
It was owned by Leo Zendell who some years later enclosed it and renamed it Leo’s Market. Also next door, where the restaurant is located, was the original location of Imperial Drug Co., which was founded by Ben Schwarz and had a street-level entrance where the entrance to the restaurant is located.
