East County
A brush fire sparked by a downed power line burned more than 33 acres, and for a time threatened several homes Saturday in a remote East County area known as Flinn Springs, the California Department of Forestry reported.
About 73 federal and state forestry personnel battled the blaze that began about 1 p.m. With the help of two aerial tankers, a helicopter and eight trucks, the fire was contained about 4 p.m.
Although some homes on Shanteau Drive, east of Old Highway 80, were threatened, fire crews and area residents armed with garden hoses kept surrounding brush wet enough to prevent any spread of fire.
