Rise in AIDS Cases Reported in Europe

GENEVA — The World Health Organization reported Friday that AIDS continues to spread in Europe, with 940 cases and a 49.8% fatality rate up to March 31.
Of the 940 cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome by that time, the agency said, 178 were new cases since January.
France has an average of 3 to 4 new cases each week, followed by the United Kingdom and West Germany with 2 to 3 and 1 new case weekly in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
The U.N.-related agency said the highest rates per million population are in Denmark with 8 per million, Switzerland with 7.9 and France with 5.6.
