A 30-year-old Huntington Beach man died at Fountain Valley Community Hospital 18 days after he was shot by police who claim the man pulled a gun after being roused from sleep in his parked car.
According to police reports, Stephen L. Dye was shot by Officer Bob Jeffrey after he and Officer Doug Tallman answered a call May 26 about a drunk in a parked car in the downtown area. When the officers found Dye lying on the front seat and shined a flashlight on him, Dye then pointed a revolver at Tallman. Jeffrey fired a single shot, hitting Dye in the abdomen, according to police. According to a hospital spokesman, Dye died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
The incident is under investigation by the Orange County district attorney’s office, which reviews all officer-involved shootings. A police spokesman said it would probably be another four weeks before a decision is made in the case.
