Taking Sides on Abortion Issue
Thomas’ article exemplifies the narrow-mindedness through which people claiming to be the “Moral Majority” look at issues.
The significance of the decision is that the choice of the woman to have an abortion, at least during the first trimester of pregnancy, is her private decision and not the public decision of the state. During the second trimester the state may regulate abortions to preserve and protect maternal health. At the beginning of the third trimester the fetus becomes viable, it can live outside of the mother’s womb, and the state may prohibit abortions during that period.
