Dominguez Professor Wins Teacher Award

Dr. James Lyle of Hermosa Beach has won the Lyle E. Gibson Distinguished Teacher Award at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Lyle, a chemistry professor, developed a summer organic chemistry course for premedical students. He was commended for his skills in organizing material and presenting it to students understandably.

Flutist Eunice Kim, a sophomore at Torrance High School, has won cash awards from the Peninsula Symphony Assn. and the California Federation of Women’s Clubs. She also was one of 11 flutists from 300 entrants to participate in the All-Southern California Honor Band. She has studied the flute for three years at the South Bay Conservatory.

Arminta Harness of Manhattan Beach has been given the Alumni Merit Award by the Alumni Council of Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Mo., for outstanding professional achievement. Harness was selected from five nominees who were screened by the Alumni Council, which represents 10,000 Lindenwood alumni. Harness, a retired Air Force colonel, joined the service as an engineer after graduating from Lindenwood in 1949. She also managed laboratory planning for Hanford Engineer Development Laboratory in Richland, Wash., for five years.

North High School student Jackie Mowery of Lawndale received the Ruth Gross Memorial Award and a savings bond for contributions to Torrance volunteer organizations. Four other Torrance students received awards from the Torrance Coordinating Council and the Torrance Police Officers Assn: Pearl Yu, Cheryl Peterson, Helen Suhr and Michelle Gay. Gross was a founding member of the council, a civic organization.

Pauline Milkavich was named Lomita’s Outstanding Older American for 1985 at a City Council meeting last week.

Several Westchester High School seniors were elected by classmates and faculty to the Ehebian Society for academic achievement and school and community service. The Ehebian Society, a civic betterment and service organization, inducted seniors Steven Andelin, Lisa Appleberry, Greg Fairbrother, Gayle Foreman, Cindy Grijalva, Angela Hanley, Michelle Knotts, Craig Marantz, Lisa Millsap, Patrick O’Connor and Greg Phelps at a ceremony last month at Hollywood High School.

Barbara Matheny of San Pedro won the applied and fine arts first-place cash prize in the Bank of America’s Achievement Awards Program. Mary Donnelly of San Pedro took second place in liberal arts and Paul Log of Torrance came in third in applied and fine arts. They also were judged on involvement in community activities and academic performance. The awards program recognizes high school seniors for civic achievement and leadership.

Michael McClure, an English teacher at Hawthorne High School, earned an honorable mention in the 1985 National PTA Phebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Educator of the Year award program. McClure, of Long Beach, is a graduate of Lennox High who received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount University and his master’s in English literature from Boston College. McClure will receive the award Saturday at a national PTA convention in Washington.
