Gooden Strikes Out 14; Mets Beat Giants, 2-1
SAN FRANCISCO — Dwight Gooden struck out 14 Thursday to take over the National League strikeout lead as the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants, 2-1.
Gooden (7-3) raised his strikeout total to 89, pulling away from Houston’s Nolan Ryan, with whom he was tied entering the game. Gooden, who snapped a two-game losing streak, allowed six hits and saw his bid for a shutout ruined when Alex Trevino lined his first home run of the year over the left-field fence in the seventh inning. The 14 strikeouts was a season high for Gooden, who struck out the side in the ninth inning.
San Francisco starter Jim Gott (2-2) allowed only five hits and one earned run in seven innings.
