VANCOUVER, Wash. — Mt. St. Helens spewed gas and rumbled with small quakes Saturday as nearby residents held a parade to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the volcano’s eruption, which killed 36 persons and left 21 missing.
The mountain came to life about a week ago after eight months of quiet, indicating that its 820-foot lava dome may be expanding, scientists said. The new activity could lead to a small gas or ash eruption.
