Viewers Lodge Complaints : TV Drops Anita Bryant
ATLANTA — Anita Bryant, who sparked controversy in the 1970s with her outspoken opposition to homosexual rights, has been dropped from a local television show after one appearance.
Bryant was taken off “PM Atlanta” because of negative reaction from viewers after her heavily promoted debut, WAGA-TV General Manager Paul Raymon said.
Bryant lost her job as spokeswoman for Florida orange juice in the 1970s amid her successful campaign to repeal a Miami gay rights ordinance.
“We were under the impression, and I think she was as well, that the past controversies that had surrounded her no longer existed,” Raymon said. “But we did get something of a groundswell of reaction that indicated that it still does exist, at least in Atlanta.”
He did not cite specific complaints.
Bryant could not be reached for comment.
