Grossmont League Track : Grossmont’s Arreola Sets Meet Mark in Girls’ Mile Race at Track Prelims
EL CAJON — After a week of rare rest, Grossmont High School’s Darcy Arreola responded by setting a meet record Friday in the Grossmont League preliminary track meet at Granite Hills High. Arreola, a junior, ran the girls’ mile in a record 4:57.4 and was also the top qualifier in the 880 (2:14.8) for the Grossmont League finals set for 5 p.m. May 10 at Granite Hills.
Arreola, who opted not to run in last Saturday’s Mount San Antonio College Relays, had not raced since she ran four events in a Grossmont League meet last Friday. It may have been a contributing factor in her lowering her county-best mile time from 5:03.5.
Arreola’s teammate, Dana Copeland, lowered her best time in the girls’ 110-yard low hurdles to 15.1 for the top qualifying mark. El Capitan’s Jennifer Clinger had the top 330 low hurdle mark, 48.8. Copeland, the county leader, ran 48.9. Mike Anderson of Helix had both of the boys’ top hurdle marks, 14.86 in the 120 highs and 40.69 in the 330 intermediates.
Monte Vista’s Traci Baker was the leading qualifier in the girls’ 220 (26.14), 440 (58.47) and tied with Santana’s Kim Washington at 100 meters in 12.7. Mount Miguel’s Ron Young led the boys’ sprinters, winning the 100 in 10.67 and the 220 in 22.14.
Monte Vista’s Kerri Langley (4:29) edged Valhalla’s Mark Dani (4:31.5) as the leading qualifier in the boys’ mile. Langley (2:01.8) qualified second to Granite Hills’ Tom Williams (1:59.3) in the 880. Eric Peterson of Monte Vista was the leading qualifier in the boys’ 440 (51.81).
