Steinbrenner Says There’ll Be Some Changes Made on Yankees

George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, who appeared to have been avoiding the press so that he wouldn’t have to talk about firing Yogi Berra as manager, did speak to Cable News Network’s Nick Charles at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Part of Charles’ report was shown Thursday night at 8:30 and 11:30, with the second part to be shown tonight at the same times.

Some excerpts of what Steinbrenner had to say:

--�Yogi set the rules up, and if the fellows aren’t going to abide by them, then they should be made to, and they weren’t. I just feel very strong that, give Billy a chance, and he will make some changes. . . . You can look for some changes in the next week or 10 days.�

--�I’m a tough boss, but if I’m so tough and so ridiculous and so bad, why is Clyde King still with me, why is Billy Martin still with me, why is Bob Lemon, and why is Gene Michael my third base coach?�

--�People think I came down too hard on Yogi, persecuted Yogi and wasn’t fair. I agree, it wasn’t fair. He’s too good a man, he’s too nice a person. We talked, and it was perfect. We talked on the phone, and he is going to come see me.�

--�I read in the paper some players threw chairs when they heard Billy was coming back. They did this and did that. Hey, I have no sympathy for those fellows. If they were doing their jobs and winning ballgames, Yogi’d be riding fine. So they shouldn’t act like they’d been wronged. They wronged Yogi.�
