The unguarded U.S. military cemetery at Omaha Beach in Normandy was invaded by vandals who splattered the main monument with slogans, many of them anti-Jewish, an official reported Thursday.

He said it was the first such incident at the site since a permanent cemetery was created at Omaha Beach in 1954 to replace temporary burying grounds dug during the war.

Many casualties of the June 6, 1944, Allied invasion at Normandy are buried in the cemetery.

The slogans, daubed in red and black, included, “Jews Responsible for War,†“Victory 1944, Victory for Zionism,†“PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) Will Win,†“Zionists--SS,†“Reagan--Jew,†and “U.S. Go.â€

More than a million visitors come each year to the cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach.

The official, who declined to be named under the regulations of the American Battle Monuments Commission, said the vandals struck Monday night or early Tuesday.
