San Diego
A small chemical spill at the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and Zion Avenue on Monday sent two police officers to the hospital and forced the closure of the 4500 block of Mission Gorge Road for an hour, the San Diego Fire Department said.
About 9:40 a.m. two one-gallon containers of hydrochloric acid and muriatic acid, which had fallen from the truck of a swimming pool cleaner, mixed together and created a noxious cloud of gas. Fire Department spokesman Logan Bellows said the officers, overcome shortly after arriving at the scene, suffered nausea and burning sensations in the eyes and throat. The officers were treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital and released.
