A controversial plan to reroute California 1 around the crumbling cliffs of Devil’s Slide, south of San Francisco, has received preliminary approval from the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. A seven-mile stretch of the highway that is frequently closed by slides of mud and rock would be rerouted. The plan will be returned to the supervisors for final vote on April 18. The California Coastal Commission must also approve the plan before construction can begin.
