Trial Date in Liu Death Told

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Three former military intelligence officials will go on trial Thursday in the slaying of a Chinese-American journalist in California, a newspaper reported Sunday.
Defense Ministry officials declined to comment on the report in the mass circulation China Times, but said the trial date may be announced this week.
The three intelligence officials and three men reputed to be members of Taiwan’s underworld Bamboo Gang have been charged in the slaying of Henry Liu, 52, whose writings were sometimes critical of the Nationalist government in Taiwan.
Slain in California
Liu was killed in Daly City, Calif., Oct. 15. His wife, Helen, says the killing was politically motivated to silence him.
The intelligence officials, who have been in military custody since Jan. 15, are Vice Adm. Wang Hsi-ling, 58, former director of the Defense Ministry’s intelligence bureau; his deputy, Maj. Gen. Hu Yi-min, 58, and Col. Chen Hu-men, 41, a deputy section chief in the agency.
