Local News in Brief : Hang Glider Fails; Pilot Parachutes to Safety
A Van Nuys hang-glider pilot whose wing supports broke at 10,000 feet parachuted to safety in the San Gabriel Mountains, a sheriff’s deputy said Saturday.
Deputy Alarese Hunt said Ted Boyce, 24, was hang gliding near Mt. Wilson Friday afternoon when violent winds snapped the wires that allow him to control his glider. Boyce told police he fell 6,000 feet before his parachute was activated, Hunt said. Boyce, who landed on the east ridge of Mt. Harvard, was eventually rescued by a Sheriff’s Department helicopter, the spokeswoman said.
Boyce, who suffered minor facial abrasions, returned to the mountains Saturday to look for pieces of his glider, a friend said.
