Club Aims to Defeat Cranston, Hart, Dodd

RALEIGH, N.C. — A National Congressional Club official says it will “spend as much as we can raise” to help defeat several liberal U.S. senators, including Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) and Gary Hart (D-Colo.).
“Right now it is our intention to do independent expenditures in those races,” said Carter Wrenn, the club’s executive director.
The group, which was formed to pay off the first campaign debt of conservative Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.), has so far targeted Cranston, Hart and Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.).
The club raised about $4.5 million for President Reagan in 1980 and about $1 million in 1984.
