Carlsbad
A 26-year-old Carlsbad man died Friday of injuries suffered when the car he was driving was struck by a northbound Amtrak train, which was traveling at 90 m.p.h., a Carlsbad police spokeswoman said. Matthis James Weldon was pronounced dead about 2 p.m. at Tri-City Hospital of massive head injuries, the spokeswoman said. Witnesses told police that the man drove around crossing barriers in the 400 block of Tamarack Avenue and inched the car onto the tracks just before the train came around a bend. The car was hit broadside, ejecting Weldon.
