Hu Yaobang, leader of China’s Communist Party, warned that China will not hesitate to “remove the threat†posed by an estimated 500,000 Vietnamese troops along its southern border, the official New China News Agency said, During an inspection last week in China’s southern Yunnan province, Hu praised Chinese border troops for successfully “defending the frontier.†Diplomats in Peking said they doubted that China would launch a major attack in support of guerrillas fighting Vietnamese forces in Cambodia, as it did six years ago.
