KNBC NAMES NEWS CHIEF

Tom Capra, a producer on the CBS news magazine “60 Minutes,†was named news director at KNBC Channel 4 Wednesday.

Capra, 44, the son of famed film director Frank Capra, will join the NBC-owned station on March 6, General Manager John Rohrbeck said. The job has been vacant since Nov. 27, when Rohrbeck had requested the resignation of Steve Antoniotti, who had been running the news department since May, 1982.

A native of Los Angeles who earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from USC, Capra has worked at KNBC before, as a news writer in 1970 and 1971. He then joined ABC News and worked as a producer on such programs as “World News Tonight†and “20/20.â€

He left the network in 1981 to become vice president and managing editor of the Satellite News Channel, a now-defunct cable programming service, then signed on at CBS in 1983. He worked as a producer on the magazine shows “The American Parade†and “Crossroads,†then joined “60 Minutes†last September.
