College Basketball Roundup : Schrempf’s 20 Leads Huskies to 81-63 Victory
Detlef Schrempf scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Monday night to lead Washington past Arizona State, 81-63, in a Pacific 10 game at Seattle.
Washington improved its record to 8-4 in the Pac-10 and 17-7 overall, while Arizona State slipped to 6-6 and 11-11.
Schrempf’s two free throws with 47 seconds left in the first half gave Washington a 34-33 lead at intermission. Washington never trailed in the second half, and the Huskies led by as many as 23 points in the closing minutes.
Both teams encountered foul trouble. Washington center Chris Welp picked up his fourth foul just 1:23 into the second half. Arizona State senior center Jim Deines picked up his fourth with 16 minutes to go, and Eric Holloway his fourth at 14:10.
Holloway led Arizona State with nine points.
Georgetown 57, Villanova 50--The Wildcats led by nine points in the first half and by one point with three minutes left in the game but wilted in the stretch at Landover, Md.
Georgetown is 22-2 overall and 9-2 in the Big East; Villanova 15-7 and 7-7.
Villanova moved to a 9-0 lead as Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing missed his first five shots, but Ewing hit eight of his last nine shots to lead all scorers with 16 points. He also had 11 rebounds.
Villanova took a 45-44 lead with 3:32 remaining, but a baseline jumper by Ewing ignited a 6-0 run by the Hoyas, who took command for good.
Harold Pressley led the Wildcats with 14 points.
Baylor 94, SMU 90--Freshman Eric Johnson came off the bench to score 24 points as the Bears stunned the ninth-rated Mustangs at Waco, Tex.
SMU, which previously had lost road games to Arkansas and North Carolina State, fell to 18-5 overall and 8-3 in the Southwest Conference, a half-game ahead of Texas A&M.; Baylor is 9-12 and 2-8.
Carlos Briggs added 20 points for Baylor, and Michael Williams and Edwin Mitchell combined to hit 14 of 16 free throws in the last 3 1/2 minutes.
SMU center Jon Koncak was held to 12 points before fouling out with four minutes left. Larry Davis led the Mustangs with 21 points.
Louisville 70, Virginia Tech 65--Barry Sumpter scored 18 points and Billy Thompson added 16 for the Cardinals who held on after building a 17-point halftime lead at Blacksburg, Va.
Louisville is 12-11 and 3-6 in the Metro Conference; Virginia Tech 16-6 and 7-3. Perry Young (VT) 20; Bobby Beecher (VT) 17; Dell Curry (VT) 15.
