Man Dies From Two Bullet Wounds Inflicted 26 Years Ago
MIAMI — Two bullets fired nearly 26 years ago have killed Isaiah Wilcox, 61, and police said Sunday that they are looking for his former wife for questioning, even though it is unlikely that she can be prosecuted.
Dr. Charles Wetli, Dade County’s chief deputy medical examiner, said Wilcox’s death Jan. 23 was a direct result of the bullet wounds in the stomach.
Wetli said an infection caused by the bullet wounds killed Wilcox. “This type of complication is a reasonable and foreseeable consequence of gunshot wounds in the abdomen,†he said.
The death was ruled a homicide.
Lillie Wilcox, 58, was not charged in the 1959 shooting. She contended that she shot her husband after he began beating their children.
She is thought to be living in the Miami area and reportedly attended her ex-husband’s funeral services, apparently unaware that she was responsible for his death.
Authorities said that she can be prosecuted only if they can prove premeditated murder because the statute of limitations has expired on any lesser crimes.
“We want to find her,†said Rex Remley, a Metro-Dade homicide detective. “We need her account of what occurred that day.â€
