Chinese Judge Takes Seat on World Court

THE HAGUE — Two new judges have been sworn in at the World Court, including the first member from the People’s Republic of China in the court’s 40-year history.
In a public ceremony Wednesday at the Peace Palace, judges Ni Zhengyu of China and Jens Evensen of Norway took the oath of office. They were elected last November by the U.N. General Assembly to succeed judges from West Germany and Syria.
The 15-member court, officially known as the International Court of Justice, is the judicial arm of the United Nations, but it has no power to enforce its rulings.
