The Angels’ signing of Mike Witt Wednesday has provided another intriguing example of baseball’s new math.

Witt, who had a 15-11 record last year, was 8-9, 8-6 and 7-14 in his three previous seasons.

That adds to a 38-40 lifetime record--and, apparently, lifetime security.

Witt’s three-year contract guarantees the 24-year-old right-hander $2,150,000 for the three years.

He can make another $750,000 for a total of $2.9 million if he fulfills all of the incentive provisions.

This is how it works:

--Witt got a signing bonus of $100,000 and is guaranteed salaries of $500,000 this year, $700,000 in 1986 and $850,000 in 1987.

--He will get $1,667 for each inning he pitches this year between 151 and 240--or $150,000 if he pitches more.

--Next year, he will get $2,222 for every inning he pitches between 151 and 240--or $200,000 if he pitches more.

--In 1987, he will get $2,777 for every inning he pitches between 151 and 240--or $250,000 if he pitches more.

--He can make an annual bonus of $50,000 by winning the Cy Young Award.

Witt pitched 246 innings in 1984 and ended the season with a perfect game.
