Sabres’ Barrasso Cuts Down Bruins, 6-2

All-Star goaltender Tom Barrasso gave up a goal in the opening minute, then dominated the rest of the game Wednesday night at Buffalo to lead the Sabres to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Terry O’Reilly gave the Bruins a quick 1-0 lead, but before they could score again, the Sabres scored four times and, for the moment at least, turned back the Bruins bid to tighten the Adams Division race.

Smooth-skating veteran Gil Perreault got the Sabres even halfway through the first period with his 17th goal. Before the period ended, Brent Peterson and Larry Playfair also had scored for the Sabres.

With a little luck, Barrasso, who stopped 24 shots, would have had a shutout. Reilly’s goal came on a deflection that hit the stick of Buffalo defenseman Dave Fenyves and caromed into the net.

In the final period, Dave Reid fired a 40-footer that nipped the inside post to cut the lead, briefly, to 4-2.

Toronto 6, Pittsburgh 5--Dan Daoust scored with 16 seconds remaining at Pittsburgh to climax a late rally by the improving Maple Leafs.

With a little more than two minutes remaining, the Penguins led, 5-4. John Anderson fired a 30-footer to tie the score before Daoust won it. The Leafs outshot the Penguins, 46-28.

Winnipeg 6, Chicago 3--All-Star defenseman Randy Carlyle and Brian Mullen scored goals 83 seconds apart in the third period at Chicago to give the Jets the victory. Their fifth win in the last seven games put the Jets into a tie with Calgary for second place in the Smythe Division.

Vancouver 5, Montreal 4--Tony Tanti scored his third goal of the game with just 17 seconds remaining in overtime at Vancouver to give the Canucks the victory.

The Canucks trailed, 4-2, going into the third period, but tied the game on goals by Tanti and Petri Skriko.
