A sharp, short earthquake on the California-Nevada border was felt in wide areas of both states, but there were no reports of damage or injury. The temblor registered 4.9 on the Richter scale, according to the seismology lab at the University of Nevada, Reno. A university spokesman said its epicenter was two miles east of Mono Lake in California. There were reports of the quake being felt in several areas of Northern California--including Sacramento, 135 miles from Reno. “It was a little one that made the jail door creak,†said Bill Johnson, dispatcher for the Mineral County sheriff’s office in Hawthorne, Nev.
