Geraldine Larson, a veteran U.S. Forest Service official, has been named supervisor of the Tahoe National Forest, the first woman supervisor of a national forest in the United States. Larson succeeds Robert Lancaster, who retired Dec. 31. The job entails overseeing about 800,000 acres of national forest land, with a current annual budget of $13.5 million. A New York City native, Larson grew up in the city and said she never saw a national forest until she married and took a cross-country trip with her husband. She has a master’s degree in botany from the University of California at Berkeley.
